Insure Against Flooding
by Ritchie Mehta (23 November 2009)

Some parts of Britain have been absolutely devastated by the current wave of torrential rain that has hit our shores. Particularly parts of Northern England and Scotland have felt the brunt of the harsh weather. Workington, a Cumbrian city has been hit exceptionally bad by over-flowing rivers and continual pounding of rain, so much so that a number of bridges have collapsed and now the city literally stands in two. The Cumbrian authorities have been put on alert to the faulty bridges and are about to embark on an extensive operation to inspect the majority of the bridges in the county.

According to the Association of British Insurers, the damage in these parts of the country could cost in the region of £100 million. They estimate that they have received over 1,000 claims to date, which will surely rise in the near future. Around 1,300 homes have been badly hit by the disaster with many losing basic necessities such as electricity and water. The situation has gotten so tense that flood bags are being handed out in parts of the country such as Cockermouth.

If there is any lessons that can be learned from this incident, it is that insurance is something that should be on the essential list. No doubt what will emerge is numerous examples of victims who are not adequately insured who will have to pay a hefty price for the damages caused.

It is important to understand that when it comes to home insurance there are a number of products available that cover you for various things. The two most popular are buildings insurance and contents insurance. The major distinction between the two is that the first will usually cover the external frame of the house or the bricks and mortar. Contents insurance covers your personal possessions or valuables that you keep within the house.
